MARIN COUNTY, CA – The Marin County Board of Supervisors unanimously approved a resolution Tuesday to issue a notice of intent that the county intends to buy surplus housing from the U.S. Coast Guard in Point Reyes Station.

There are 37 vacant, decommissioned town homes on the 32 acres of land located at 100 Commodore Webster Drive. The Coast Guard agreed in 2016 to convey the property and sell it to Marin County for $4.3 million.

The Community Land Trust Association of West Marin (CLAM) wants to acquire the existing homes and hold it in trust for affordable workforce housing in West Marin.

"This is a price no one thought possible," CLAM principal officer Kim Thompson told the Board of Supervisors Tuesday morning.

On its website, CLAM said it has been working for two years to assure the county can acquire the housing.

There is no other comparable opportunity to secure so many affordable homes in a single acquisition, CLAM said.

Proponents of the sale urged county officials to expedite the purchase as soon as possible.

"We hope the deal will be closed by the end of the year," Supervisor Dennis Rodoni said.

The county's notice of intent to buy the property will be published three times in the Marin Independent Journal until Sept. 4.
