The runway was constructed in 1968, and a June 2016 inspection showed cracking and sagging.

MARIN COUNTY, CA – The Marin County Board of Supervisors Tuesday morning approved a $1.6 million pavement renovation of the runway at Gnoss Field Airport in Novato.
The runway pavement project will close Gnoss Field for four or five weeks in mid-September, according to the county's Department of Public Works.
The 3,300-foot-long and 75-foot-wide runway was constructed in 1968, and a June 2016 inspection showed cracking and sagging.

The base structure under the runway will be leveled and rebuilt, and distressed taxiway sections will be improved. The renovated runway will enhance safety and provide a smooth surface with improved drainage and pavement markings, according to the county's Department of Public Works.
Construction under an intensive schedule must be finished before temperatures drop in the fall. The runway closure is expected to last for 30-40 days.

A Federal Aviation Administration grant will cover 90 percent of the project costs. Local funds from airport tenants' hangar fees will pay the remaining 10 percent that will be financed over four years. The actual cost
of the project will be determined when construction bids are received in August.
The FAA also is considering approval of a separate runway extension project.
The 120-acre Gnoss Field is located on the east side of U.S. Highway 101.
