Marin Hires New Health And Human Services Director

Bay Area health care executive Benita McLarin has been hired to lead Marin County's Department of Health and Human Services.

MARIN COUNTY, CA – Bay Area health care executive Benita McLarin has been hired to lead Marin County's Department of Health and Human Services. McLarin has more than a decade of experience as a public agency administrator.

"I have spent my entire career as a proponent for bringing equity into all services," McLarin said in a statement. "I'm excited to continue that work and look forward to serving the people of Marin."

McLarin most recently served as chief operating officer for Santa Clara Valley Medical Center. Prior to that position, she was vice president of the Ambulatory Healthcare Services for the Alameda Health System. She has also served in leadership positions at the health departments of both Sonoma and Solano counties, as well as a medical service corps officer and combat veteran for the U.S. Army.

McLarin has a bachelor's degree in psychology from Washington University in Saint Louis, Missouri, a master's degree in health administration from Chapman University in Orange, California, and a master's in health policy and management from Harvard University's School of Public Health in Boston, Massachusetts. She is board certified in health care management with the American College of Healthcare Executives.

"Benita is an extraordinary health care professional with a strong focus on equity and a compassionate approach to the needs of individuals and communities," Marin County Board of Supervisors President Kate Sears said in a statement.

"Her collaborative style and focus on staff and community will serve us well. Benita is a great fit for HHS and Marin County and I'm excited about her joining the county management team."

McLarin's first day on the job will be Sept. 9. Her annual salary will be $254,675, according to the county.

She will replace Hyacinth Hinojosa, the department's chief operations officer who has served as interim director since February 2019.
