Marin Honors Volunteers, Student Interns
The county recently recognized 187 outstanding volunteers and student interns who ranged in age from 9 ½ to 95 years old.

MARIN COUNTY, CA – With a smile-filled ceremony Aug. 15, the Marin County Board of Supervisors honored 187 outstanding volunteers and student interns who range in age from 9 ½ to 95 years old. The honorees completed their service with the Marin County Civic Center Volunteers program during the past year, each contributing from 50 to more than 3,400 hours, and from one semester to more than 25 years of service.
Supervisor Judy Arnold chaired the ceremony attended by more than 40 of the honorees, including the most senior (San Rafael’s Libby Byers, 95, a senior peer counselor for the Department of Health and Human Services) and youngest (San Rafael’s Jeremiah Amilcar, 9 ½, a youth volunteer for the Marin County Free Library’s Summer Reading Program).
Honorees received formal resolutions of commendation. Assistant Director of Human Resources Lisa Baker emceed, and department leaders spoke about volunteers and interns’ impacts to County customer service.

This year’s honorees patrolled parks and waterways, ushered at Marin Center performances, counseled elders, marketed a Marin County Free Library summer reading program, inspected creeks, performed research, uprooted invasive plants from trails and hillsides, coordinated an arts and crafts fair, entered data, rebuilt picnic tables in parks, welcomed clients, completed office tasks, and much more. Volunteers supplemented services in 13 County departments.
“We are privileged to have dedicated, accomplished residents who share their knowledge, energy, and passion,” said Anne Starr, coordinator of volunteers for the Department of Human Resources. “These honorees brought experience in law, marketing, organizing, writing, management, teaching, and more to County departments. Their efforts supplemented the work of paid staff, and the County provided more service to the community than would otherwise have been possible.”

Student Internships Coordinator Joy Fossett said high school, college, and graduate students brought academic knowledge, curiosity, and a willingness to learn.
“Interns arrived eager to learn the ins and outs of their County roles,” Fossett said. “They showed great interest and enthusiasm in their projects while gaining workplace experience that will help them in their future careers. County internships help students learn firsthand about particular fields and test career paths. We loved the positive energy of this year’s honorees.”
