Moving ForWords, Literally!

ForWords Literacy Lab now has a room of its own!

ForWords Literacy Lab gets a new home! For three years the San Rafael-based ForWords has been holding its Saturday Literacy Lab in a small portion of a meeting room at Montecito Plaza, sharing the space with another non-profit. In addition to ForWords’ daily work at San Rafael High and Davidson Middle School, every Saturday ForWords staff gathers in this small room with 20 high school students to develop their new skills of reading, writing and speaking English. Now, due to a new arrangement with management, ForWords will have its very own dedicated classroom, office, and meeting space.

Class sizes in our county are growing daily. The need is enormous to provide for these young people in every arena-health, safety, food, housing, and of course literacy and education. Last year ForWords’ programs served 500 students. This year, the number has grown by 40%. Getting a new home means that ForWords can pursue its vision of continuing to add after-school and weekend classes to its programs.

ForWords Literacy Lab believes that all students, particularly those who live in under-resourced communities, deserve educational opportunities to match their drive, intelligence and hopes so they can become proud and accomplished members of our democracy.
