Shooting Threat Against San Rafael High Deemed Not Credible

SAN RAFAEL, CA – There was an increased law enforcement presence Friday at San Rafael High School as a precaution in response to a shooting threat authorities said they believe is not credible.

School staff contacted San Rafael police Thursday about graffiti in a girl's restroom on campus that threatened a shooting, said Sergeant Lisa Holton.

"Detectives and school staff immediately investigated the graffiti," Holton said. "The threat does not appear to be credible at this time."

The graffiti was photographed by a student before school staff became aware of the threat, Holton said. The photo was shared on multiple social media platforms.

"This created fear in the community, and as a result, some parents chose to keep their children home today," Holton said.

School officials reassured parents and the public on Twitter that social media posts of an active shooter at San Rafael High School or in the surrounding community were false.

"We take school safety seriously and will continue to investigate this matter to identify the responsible parties," Holton said.

Classes will resume on Tuesday per San Rafael High School's normal schedule.
