Rains Have Started and Its Time To Consider Flood Insurance

The need for flood insurance is real.

The sun is back, but the rains will return. This is the time of year that Insurance Agencies in Northern California get flooded by requests for flood insurance. No joke, the need for flood insurance is quite serious in the San Francisco Bay Area. An astonishing percentage of homes are around here are under full time threat of a flood. Floods from Tsunamis, Floods from the Bay, Floods from our rivers systems, or Floods just because of an Atmospheric River.

There has been a lot of complaints lobbed at FEMA in recent years concerning both the performance and cost of flood insurance. However it is still the primary game in town.

There are two pieces of good news concerning this type of insurance though:

NFIP Flood Insurance has a new program created recently that maybe able to help you save money. Its called the newly mapped program. The newly mapped flood insurance program is for properties that have recently had their flood zones changed to a more high risk flood zone. You will want to check with either your insurance agent or a flood specialist to see if you qualify.

The other piece of good news is the proliferation of private, non governmental, flood policies available from so called Non Admitted Insurers. These policies though can be different from FEMA policies, so buyers should beware. However for certain homes in and around Marin County, they may be the best option.
