SMART Train: Where To Park In San Rafael

SAN RAFAEL, CA – The Sonoma-Marin Rail Transit District is ready to roll Friday along the 43-mile route from the Sonoma County Airport station to the north and San Rafael to the south.

Looking to ride the SMART train from San Rafael? Here's what you need to know about parking in the city.

The city of San Rafael is advising riders to not park in the residential areas and spaces with time-limits or other parking restrictions.

Instead, riders are encouraged to park for free at the Civic Center SMART station along McInnis Parkway, which runs parallel to the Civic Center station.

Additional street parking is available on nearby Merrydale Road, the frontage road on the west side of Highway 101. The street parking there is just north of the train tracks, and there is a walkway that leads to the station.

SMART rider parking, however, is not allowed on Civic Center property, where parking is reserved for people conducting business with the County of Marin or attending Marin County Superior Court, the Marin County Farmers Market or events at Marin Center, including the Veterans' Memorial Auditorium.

SMART riders coming from Downtown San Rafael have two options for parking. Both require a fee.

Riders taking the train from the Downtown San Rafael station can park in the upper level of the parking lot at 3rd Street and Lootens Place. This level is for all-day parking, whereas the lower level is for two-hour parking only. Parking costs $0.75 per hour.

Another option is the parking garage on 3rd and A streets, which is also for all-day parking. It costs $1 per hour.
