Investigators said surveillance footage and a distinctive handgun helped identify the suspect.

SAN RAFAEL, CA — An 18-year-old San Rafael man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted homicide in connection with a shooting last week in the Canal District, police said.

Diego Alejandro Diaz Flores was taken into custody Thursday morning at a home on Tamalpais Avenue and booked into the Marin County Jail on a felony attempted homicide charge, according to the San Rafael Police Department.

According to police, surveillance video captured the shooting and showed the suspect using a distinctive handgun. Detectives said they used the footage to identify the weapon and develop leads in the case.

The following day, officers stopped a vehicle in the 800 block of Third Street and spotted a handgun matching the one seen in the surveillance video lying on the rear floorboard, police said.

A juvenile who was driving the vehicle was arrested on suspicion of possessing the firearm and booked into Marin County Juvenile Hall.

Investigators later determined the teen was in the area during the shooting and had ties to Diaz Flores, according to police.

Police said detectives also recovered additional evidence during a search of the Tamalpais Avenue home that they believe links Diaz Flores to the shooting.

The investigation remains ongoing.
