Weekend 2 Of Street Closures: SMART Train Construction
Weekend one work was wrapped up Sunday, and weekend two is pending as the Larkspur extension is underway.

SAN RAFAEL, CA – The first of two weekends of Sonoma-Marin Area Rail Transit (SMART) track work in San Rafael to build the Larkspur extension was completed Sunday afternoon, with another weekend of work scheduled for Friday night, June 7 through as late as the following Monday morning.
Third Street just west on U.S. Highway 101 in San Rafael will be closed between Tamalpais Avenue and Hetherton Street beginning at 8 p.m. Friday, June 7 through 4 a.m. Monday, June 10.
SMART began construction of its rail extension to Larkspur in July 2017. The extension to Larkspur includes 2.2 miles of track connecting San Rafael and Larkspur, a terminal station in Larkspur Landing, three bridges and rehabilitation of the Cal Park Tunnel that currently provides a bicycle/pedestrian connection to Larkspur from San Rafael.

SMART train service to Larkspur Landing is projected to begin in late 2019.
Regular SMART service began in August 2017 between San Rafael and Santa Rosa. Plans are for the system to eventually run from Larkspur Landing north to Cloverdale, a total of 70 miles.
