2 Cal High Graduates Killed In Las Vegas Shooting Will Be Honored At Homecoming

SAN RAMON, CA — Two California High School graduates killed in the tragic Las Vegas shooting this week will be honored at the high school’s upcoming homecoming, school district officials said. Novato resident Stacee (Rodriguez) Etcheber, class of 1985, and Santa Barbara resident Denise (Freed) Cohen, class of 1977, both died during the shooting that left 59 people dead and more than 500 injured. Etcheber leaves behind two children and her husband, San Francisco police officer Vinnie Etcheber.

More than 22,000 people attended the Route 91 Harvest Festival, an outdoor country music concert that was held near the Las Vegas Strip. Shortly after 10 p.m. on Sunday, 64-year-old Stephen Craig Paddock opened fire on the crowd from the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay Hotel, Las Vegas police said.

According to a statement from San Francisco Police Officers Association President Martin Halloran, during the ordeal Vinnie Etcheber told his wife to flee the scene while he stayed behind to help victims. She did not have a cellphone with her and had given her identification card to her husband.

The Victims Of The Las Vegas Shooting

“The San Ramon Valley Unified School District joins the greater community in mourning the victims of the Las Vegas attacks,” San Ramon Valley Unified School District Officials said. “Our hearts and thoughts are with the families of Denise Cohen and Stacey Etcheber.”

School district officials said the California High School Alumni Association is working with California High School to honor Cohen and Etcheber at the game on Oct. 13.

“Her boys, family and friends are all heartbroken by the loss of this beautiful soul,” Kelli Weiss Gentile wrote on Cohen’s GoFundMe page. “We will miss her big smile, positive attitude and the way she loved to live life large.”
