The Joy of Chickens!
Ever thought of getting Chickens? Low maintenance and lots of fun entertainment. Great for gardeners! Better than pesticides.

I'm not sure if this is the "latest fad" or a true desire for many of us to get back to nature. But "getting chickens" is being talked about more and more. For us, it began with pulling our lawn out and replacing it with a garden/jungle.
My husband, (it's really his garden) did not want to use pesticides on the food we were going to eat. He was also thinking of "Henry the Heron" and the many other birds and critters that stop by.
They probably do NOT want that stuff in their food either. But, we had BUGS! So we got chickens! We got them at 2-3 weeks old at the Alamo Hay and Feed Store in Alamo, great place. We kept them in a box inside the house with a lamp for about 6-8 weeks. This gave us a chance to really get to know them and they got used to us picking them up all the time-we all bonded.

Mother, Raven and Braveheart are now 2 years old, still laying eggs, eating bugs 24-7, and giving us many hours of enjoyment. I highly recommend them! Other than making sure they are locked up every night in a secure coop and letting them out each morning, they are relatively low maintenance pets. We consider the "three girls" Henry's sisters.
He basically ignores them and they stay out of his way....sounds like a teenage brother-sister relationship to me!
