SAN RAMON, CA — A Cal High senior devoted to expanding educational equity is teaching English and STEM subjects to underprivileged children in Sao Paulo, Brazil.

Sayam De founded a nonprofit called Pi Kids, Inc., along with 18 other high school volunteers, in July 2022. The group has led a number of free coding workshops and STEM classes in libraries and schools in the Bay Area, New York, India, and now, Brazil. For his work educating the less fortunate, De received a President’s Volunteer Service Award and an acknowledgement from San Ramon Vice Mayor Sridhar Verose.

Pi Kids partnered with a Brazilian NGO, Associação Instituto Dah Araujo, which runs classes to help young people succeed in the corporate world, among many other initiatives. De and his two friends Hritvik Hooda and Arnab Datta Chowdhury are running bimonthly online English and STEM classes.
