Off-Duty Fire Personnel Resuscitate Man At Gym

The pair immediately performed CPR on the man while the gym's staff grabbed a defibrillator, according to fire officials.

SAN RAMON, CA: Off-duty fire personnel were by chance at a San Ramon gym last weekend and were able to provide emergency aid to a man who went into cardiac arrest, San Ramon Valley Fire Protection District officials said. A paramedic with the district, Casey Rivers, and Deputy Chief Lon Phares were at a 24-Hour Fitness shortly after 4:30 p.m. Saturday when an announcement was made requesting the assistance of any emergency personnel.

In the gym’s treadmill area, a man had gone into cardiac arrest. He did not have a pulse and was not breathing, fire district officials said. The pair immediately performed CPR on the man while the gym’s staff grabbed a defibrillator, which was used to resuscitate him, according to the fire district. Within three minutes, fire district crews arrived and transported the man to San Ramon Regional Medical Center.

Fire district officials expressed gratitude for the quick action of the gym’s staff and noted that defibrillators are strongly suggested in areas such as local health clubs.
