San Ramon Student Raises $2500+ For Underserved Schools Through Fashion Line
Maanika Thakur's Astra fashion company has raised funds that were donated to underserved schools in India.

SAN RAMON, CA — Dougherty Valley High School senior Maanika Thakur has raised over $2,500 for various education initiatives through a non-profit fashion business.
Thakur founded Astra when she was a sophomore due to a longstanding interest in fashion and beauty, she told Patch. "However, something I noticed in the fashion and beauty industry was a lack of meaningful purposes," she said. "I wanted my brand to stand for a cause I strongly believed in, which was equitable education for all. There are so many young students across the globe who never reach their highest potential due to a lack of educational resources. Astra imagines a world where these children are given a fighting chance from the start."
She worked with her peers to develop an online store and website, which sells hoodies. Thanks to online sales and participation in small business fairs, Astra was able to generate over $2500 in profit in just six months.

Thakur donated the profits to underserved schools in India, where they were used to fund infrastructure improvements and new school supplies. While visiting the schools, Thakur led workshops in reading, writing, and math.
"I saw with my own eyes just how bright these stars could shine when given the proper support, and it reassured me of the positive impact Astra was capable of. While these are just small steps we hope to continue growing and expanding our reach," she said. "Ultimately, Astra not only acts as a way to make a tangible impact in the lives of students across the globe but also as a platform to encourage the development of education."
