Window Decal Pays Homage To Beloved ‘Costco Guy’

Thanks to the help of a friend, Arlie Smith's family was able to create personalized window decals in his memory.

SAN RAMON, CA — Window decals spotted on cars around San Ramon and Danville pay homage to beloved Costco greeter Arlie Gino Smith, a San Ramon native who died in November. Known to most in Tri-Valley as the 'Costco Guy,' Smith died on November 7th, 2017 at age 48 after battling multiple sclerosis and kidney cancer.

A fixture in the Tri-Valley community and a graduate of California High School, the longtime Costco employee was known for his warm smile, fantastic sense of humor and philanthropic endeavors. Smith worked until the very end of his life. Customers, friends and family say he will be missed.

Smith is survived by wife Shari and their dog named Tinkerbell.

  • Decals are $4 each and completed decals will be mailed to those who order.

After learning of his death, the UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital Oakland established a donation page in his honor. In lieu of flowers, Arlie's family said he would love for everyone to share in his passion by making a donation in his name. The page has garnered $6,785 since it was established.

Services for Smith were held at the Community Presbyterian Church on Nov. 17.
