📰 News we're reading

1. Five Infants Were Possibly Exposed to HIV Through Breast Milk Shared in a Social Media Group (medicaldaily.com) — Santa Clara County health officials traced five local infants who may have been exposed to HIV through informally shared breast milk and confirmed that none contracted the virus. The case highlights how hard it is for investigators to work inside private social media groups and strongly urges parents here to use screened, pasteurized milk banks or consult pediatricians if they've ever relied on informal milk sharing.

2. Man charged with kidnap, assault in July attack at Santa Clara park (mercurynews.com) — Santa Clara police have arrested and charged a 24-year-old local man in connection with a July 13 kidnapping and sexual assault reported at Carmichael Park on Benton Street. Investigators say forensic work and help from county agencies led to the arrest; the suspect is jailed without bail, and detectives are still asking anyone with information to contact them.

3. Pioneering AI and Digital Transformation Scholar Ravi Bapna Named Dean of Santa Clara University's Leavey School of Business (scu.edu) — Santa Clara University has tapped AI and analytics expert Ravi Bapna as the new dean of its Leavey School of Business, starting September 1. His appointment brings fresh tech-focused leadership to the Santa Clara campus, with plans to deepen ties to Silicon Valley companies and expand innovative, ethically grounded business programs for local and global students.

4. Waymo Cleared to Expand Robotaxi Service in California (eweek.com) — Santa Clara County is now officially part of Waymo's expanded California robotaxi territory, clearing the way for future paid autonomous rides here once the company builds out depots and charging sites. The approval dramatically widens Waymo's footprint across the Bay Area and Southern California, signaling that driverless ridehailing is moving from small pilots toward broader everyday use.

5. Santa Clara County announces winners of its first 'I voted' sticker design contest (paloaltoonline.com) — Santa Clara County voters will see newly designed "I Voted" stickers this November, created by local students from kindergarten through college. Six winning designs were chosen after more than 10,000 public votes, and officials say the contest aims to spark lifelong civic engagement among young residents, with another contest planned ahead of the 2028 election.
