Today's riddle: Why do Norway's navy ships all have barcodes? 🤔 (Answer below!)
1. Public safety labor groups plan to continue push for pension enhancements after Gov. Newsom veto (mercurynews.com) — Santa Rosa officials are relieved after Gov. Gavin Newsom vetoed AB 1383, a bill they warned could have added substantial unfunded pension costs to the city's already tight budget. Local police and fire unions argue the proposal would have improved recruitment, retention, and health outcomes, and are preparing to push similar pension enhancements with the next governor and Legislature.
2. Santa Rosa man charged with arson after two fires lit, one outside a school (pressdemocrat.com) — A Santa Rosa man has been jailed and charged with two counts of arson after small fires were set near Roseland Accelerated Middle School on Sunday night. Police say officers quickly extinguished one vegetation fire, located the suspect with witnesses' help, and reported no injuries or property damage, though the case is now headed to Sonoma County Superior Court.
3. Driver arrested on suspicion of DUI after Highway 29 crash that sent nine people to the hospital (pressdemocrat.com) — Nine people were hospitalized, including at Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital, after a head-on collision on Highway 29 north of St. Helena Saturday evening, where a Lucid SUV allegedly crossed into oncoming traffic. The driver of that vehicle was arrested on suspicion of DUI after being treated, and authorities have not yet released updates on the victims' conditions.
4. Relief from October heat wave gripping North Bay days away, forecasters say (pressdemocrat.com) — Santa Rosa is in the middle of an October heat wave, with downtown hitting 100 degrees and a heat advisory now extended through Thursday evening. Forecasters say inland areas will stay in the mid-90s to low 100s before cooling arrives Friday, so residents are urged to stay hydrated, avoid peak heat, and watch for elevated fire risk and poor air quality.
