Music Academy of the West

Beloved folk songs. A world premiere. A secret melody revealed.
Acclaimed violist Richard O’Neill and pianist-composer August Baik open the Mariposa Series with a vivid, deeply personal program about heritage, memory, and the music that lives beneath the surface. Baik’s new work draws on Korean folk songs, while Britten’s haunting Lachrymae slowly reveals a hidden song by John Dowland. Rzewski’s “Winnsboro Cotton Mill Blues” transforms a folk song made famous by Pete Seeger and transforms it into a virtuosic tour de force.
The evening culminates in Sergei Rachmaninoff’s sweeping Sonata in G Minor, arranged for viola by O’Neill — a passionate, cinematic work that has shaped both artists’ lives. For Baik, it was the first major duo sonata he studied; for O’Neill, it has remained a lifelong companion since learning it during a formative and deeply emotional summer at the Music Academy under legendary mentor Donald McInnes. Returning to the sonata over the years has revealed new layers of meaning and connection, reminding both musicians that while life changes, great music evolves alongside us.
Together, O’Neill and Baik create a powerful journey of discovery and transformation, where old songs become new again.

DREAMLAND
A Celebration of Joni Mitchell featuring Kimberly Ford is a rocking tribute to the most iconic singer-songwriter of the Woodstock generation.
Mitchell touched millions with her nearly 40-year career that spanned genres from contemporary folk to jazz to full-throated pop-rock. This incredible seven-piece band, modeled on Joni’s tenure with Tom Scott & the L.A. Express, plays all your favorite tunes, like Help Me, Both Sides Now, Conversation, Blue, River, All I Want, Free Man in Paris, Carey and, of course, Woodstock. The band also throws in a few you might not have heard before …
Celebration of Join Mitchell (COJM) has been packing houses throughout Southern and Northern California and the Southwest since 2014. Significant performances include the Lobero Theatre in Santa Barbara, Kuumbwa Jazz Center in Santa Cruz, Yoshi’s Oakland, Olivas Adobe in Ventura, Palms Playhouse in Winters and Grand Annex in San Pedro. In 2020, the band mounted its first East Coast tour with a stop at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C.
Die-hard fans can’t get enough (and often sing along) and critics have noticed. “No singer on the West Coast is paying more scrupulous attention to Mitchell’s wondrous book than Santa Barbara’s Kimberly Ford,” writes Bay Area journalist Andy Gilbert, noting her “bright and flexible soprano that effortlessly rises into Mitchell’s upper range.”
Ford and her band bring a new verve to all of Joni’s favored genres. Not content to be a paint-by-numbers tribute band, COJM infuses Mitchell’s songs with new life while paying deep respect to a revered icon and poet laureate of her generation’s songwriters.
Joni’s absence from performing has only whetted appetites for COJM since the band’s birth six years ago. Founding drummer Charles Levin approached Ford with the idea after hearing her sing on gig at a private party. Two weeks later, he emailed Ford to see if she was game for a Joni-centric band. The answer was a resounding yes! In a short time, Ford and Levin assembled a crew of the area’s best-known musicians to take on the project.

This informative and gently empowering seminar introduces seniors and their families to the growing role of end-of-life doulas (sometimes called death doulas) and how they support individuals and loved ones during one of life’s most important transitions.
End-of-life doulas provide non-medical emotional, practical, and spiritual support before, during, and after death. They work alongside families, caregivers, and hospice teams to help create a more peaceful, conscious, and meaningful end-of-life experience. Their role is to listen, guide, educate, and advocate—ensuring that a person’s wishes are honored, and their loved ones feel supported every step of the way.
In this seminar, you will learn: •	What an end-of-life doula does and how their role differs from medical or hospice care •	How doulas help with planning, decision-making, and difficult conversations •	How they support physical, emotional, spiritual, and cultural needs •	How doulas assist families before death, at the bedside, and after a loved one passes •	How having a plan in place can reduce fear, stress, and family conflict This compassionate, thoughtful presentation offers a safe space to explore an often-avoided topic with clarity, dignity, and heart—so that when the time comes, you and your loved ones feel more prepared, supported, and at peace.

About the Film Directed by Denny Tedesco, renowned for his film The Wrecking Crew, The Immediate Family tracks the rise and collaborations of a group of legendary session musicians Danny Kortchmar, Leland Sklar, Russ Kunkel, and Waddy Wachtel through the 1970s and onward, chronicling their illustrious partnerships and their formidable record of hit-making. Tedesco’s earlier documentary, The Wrecking Crew, was inducted into the Film National Archives for the Library of Congress. It followed the first wave of studio musicians in the 60s, revealing the machinery behind the booming era of the singer-songwriter, when the talents of these four musicians were in furious demand.
About the Artists Patti Zlaket caps her remarkable 2025–2026 comeback with Dance Again, her first new album in two decades. Championed by Apple Music and produced by Tariqh Akoni—Zlaket’s March 2026 single “Love Is For You” was added to the streaming giant’s ‘New In Rock’ global playlist alongside new tracks by Foo Fighters, Joe Jackson, Peter Gabriel, Ringo Starr, and Alabama Shakes—and on the heels of 2025’s three-part deluxe-edition reissue series of her remastered catalog by Meridian (ECR Music Group), the artist finds herself enjoying a remarkable and resurgent second chance. This pivotal moment greets Zlaket with a newfound audience thanks to three hit singles from the album in recent months, sold-out concert dates on tour, and glowing recognition in the press.
It was Sklar who lit the fire under Zlaket to make this new record, in fact. “I watched Immediate Family, the brilliant documentary about The Section—Lee Sklar, Danny Kortchmar, Waddy Wachtel, and Russ Kunkel,” explains Zlaket. “It was like watching a story about the soundtrack of my life. A light was turned on in me, and I couldn’t stop thinking about the film and those players. And, my life in music. Though I was performing regularly, I’d taken a long break from recording. That night, I knew the break was over.”
Zlaket did something that changed the course of her musical life—she reached out to Sklar and commended him on the film, thanking him for the decades of music. Unexpectedly, he reached back. “When the door of opportunity opens, you walk through,” says Zlaket. “So, I decided to go for broke and asked him to listen to a new song I’d yet to record. I told him if he liked it, I’d love to record it with him.” He liked it. Thus began the year-long process of recording Dance Again with Zlaket working alongside Sklar, Akoni, and stellar session players from Zlaket’s past and present.
Leland Sklar rose to prominence as a member of James Taylor’s backing band, which coalesced into a group in its own right, The Section, which supported so many of Asylum Records’ artists that they became known as Asylum’s de facto house band, as those artists became iconic singer-songwriters of the 1970s.
Sklar has recorded and toured with artists including James Taylor, Jackson Browne, Carole King, Linda Ronstadt, Phil Collins, Toto, The Doors, and Lyle Lovett. As a group member, session player, or touring musician, Sklar has appeared on over 2,000 albums and contributed to many motion picture and television show soundtracks. Since 2018, he has been the bassist for The Immediate Family, a group reuniting lifelong friends and most of his former bandmates from The Section.
