Deal would shift State Water rights from Montecito to proposed Solomon Hills development in Santa Barbara's North County (newspress.com) — A proposed $40 million deal could permanently shift more than 40% of Montecito's State Water Project rights to the planned 4,000-home Solomon Hills community between Orcutt and Los Alamos in Santa Barbara's North County. Montecito officials say local customers won't see reliability impacts, while county leaders stress the water transfer is crucial for the development's approval, which also hinges on a lengthy environmental review.
   

2. Santa Barbara Humane Announces Six Months of Free Spay and Neuter Surgeries for North County Pets (independent.com) — Santa Barbara County pet owners, especially in North County, can get free spay and neuter surgeries for their cats and dogs from October 1 through March 31, 2027 via Santa Barbara Humane's Santa Maria clinic and mobile clinic. The nonprofit, which also operates a campus in Santa Barbara, aims to remove cost barriers to essential vet care and reduce shelter overcrowding, with appointments required and financial assistance available year-round.
   

3. Mark Patton: C.J. Shaw Shows Staying Power as UCSB's Heir Apparent to NBA Star Ajay Mitchell (noozhawk.com) — UCSB men's basketball is gearing up for a six-game nonconference home slate starting Nov. 2, with season ticket demand reportedly at an all-time high in Santa Barbara. Sophomore guard C.J. Shaw explains how former Gaucho star and new program general manager Ajay Mitchell convinced him to stay at UCSB, as the team reloads for another run at March Madness.
   

4. Activists stand up to defend the coast in environmental rally at Santa Barbara's West Beach (newspress.com) — Hundreds of residents and local groups packed Santa Barbara's West Beach to protest new offshore oil drilling and urge Gov. Newsom to sign a bill limiting federal drilling off our coast. Speakers, including a Santa Barbara councilmember and youth organizers, pushed back on county supervisors favoring petroleum and framed coastal protection as essential for clean air, water, and local democracy.
