Nineteen people were arrested during New Year's festivities in Santa Cruz Wednesday night and into Thursday morning, police said. Police said there were no major incidents of violence during New Year's celebrations. There were eight people arrested for public intoxication, eight people arrested for drug possession and three people arrested on other offenses, police said. Police cited 38 people during New Year's festivities, 26 of them cited for possession of open containers of alcohol. Both arrests and citations issued were down from 20 and 42, respectively, compared to the previous year's celebrations, according to police. At one point in the night, a group of about 20 people dressed in all black clothing held a protest, carrying homemade banners promoting violence and death to police officers, police said. Some members of the group vandalized county cars near the Santa Cruz Jail by throwing rocks and bottles, according to police. Officers detained three members of the group for questioning, but there were no arrests made.--Bay City News
