1. Dragonfly Year: Santa Cruz County Sees a Summer Bloom (goodtimes.sc) — Santa Cruz County residents are seeing unusually large swarms of dragonflies this summer, especially along the San Lorenzo River, north coast lagoons, Pinto Lake, and Watsonville sloughs. Experts say a wet winter likely boosted breeding, and locals are encouraged to enjoy the spectacle and create dragonfly-friendly gardens by avoiding pesticides and adding sunny perches or small fishless ponds.
   

2. Flag football games postponed due to excessive heat (santacruzsentinel.com) — Several Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League flag football games, including Soquel vs. Santa Cruz at Aptos High, were postponed due to dangerous on-field heat, with one makeup set for Oct. 10 in Santa Cruz. Santa Cruz High's home football game against Santa Clara was also shifted to Saturday afternoon because of an official shortage, while local water polo and surfing athletes from Santa Cruz continue strong early-season performances.
   

3. More than 2,000 PG&E customers without power in Corralitos area (ksbw.com) — Thousands of PG&E customers in the Corralitos area of Santa Cruz County lost power Wednesday afternoon, with crews still working to find the cause and restore service. Residents are reminded they may qualify for PG&E's Safety Net compensation after long outages and get detailed CDC guidance on which refrigerated and frozen foods to keep or toss once electricity returns.
   

4. Melinda Aldrich to receive 2026 Ethos Award from UC Santa Cruz (vumc.org) — UC Santa Cruz has named alumna Melinda Aldrich, now a Vanderbilt Health professor and lung cancer epidemiology expert, as a 2026 Alumni Awards honoree. She and several other alumni will be celebrated at an October 16 gala on campus, highlighting the global impact and community-minded values fostered at UC Santa Cruz.
