Aptos Teen Faces Difficult Recovery Following Hammer Attack

The boy was rushed to a trauma center and has a "long road to recovery." Friends and family are raising funds to help pay for his care.

SANTA CRUZ COUNTY, CA — An Aptos teenager who suffered a severe head injury after he was allegedly attacked last week while he slept has a “long road to recovery,” according to the Santa Cruz County Sheriff's Office. Alex T., a 17-year-old high school student was one of three boys attacked by a suspect with a hammer early on May 28.

Alex was taken to a trauma center for significant head injury and was placed in the intensive care unit in a medically-induced coma. After enduring emergency brain surgery, he is now awake and communicating, according to a GoFundMe page established to help pay for his medical expenses.

A 15-year-old boy was arrested Friday morning in Watsonville in connection with the brutal attack. He was booked into Santa Cruz County Juvenile Hall on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon and robbery.

A family friend created the online fundraiser, which has garnered more than $47,000 so far.

“His indomitable spirit is truly an inspiration to us all. He's a very special young man, still offering a smile to his nurses and visitors even when in severe pain.
