Coronavirus: County Wants 90 Hotel Rooms For Homeless Patients

The hotel or motel rooms would be used to house homeless in Santa Cruz County during the outbreak.

SANTA CRUZ COUNTY, CA — Santa Cruz County is looking to secure 90 hotel or motel rooms for homeless patients recovering in isolation from the new coronavirus. Last week Gov. Gavin Newsom announced plans to allocate $50 million to house homeless coronavirus patients and $100 million for emergency housing and shelter support.

The county said in a statement that it is in the advanced stage of negotiations to secure the rooms and is looking to secure more through the Santa Cruz County Administrative Office and Human Services Department.

The county and state are working together to provide additional sheltering, according to the statement.

Nearly 2,200 Santa Cruz County residents are homeless and 1,700 do not have access to shelter, the county said.
