Will MAH’s New 3rd Friday “SCHOOL DAYS” be
a) A brilliant spree of school day games, activities, and
performances run by local schools and students?
b) A classroom gone wild with wacky science experiments, buzzing
spelling bees, daring history trivia, and a cozy story corner?
c) A journey into memory lane, where recess never ends, crazy hair day
never goes out of style, and chess tournaments battle to the end?
d) All of the above
If you answered d) all of the above— then give yourself a gold star
and head down to the MAH for a night of a school day adventure! Co-run
by the students of Santa Cruz public schools, School Days will offer
something for everyone:
Snuggle up in our pillowed story corner and hear your favorite books
read aloud, rock out to jamming high school bands, compete in a
thrilling s p e l l i n g b e e, show off your wits with history
trivia and ongoing chess tournaments, explore science mysteries, and
play outrageous math games.
And if all of that makes you itch for the outdoors, then skip to extra
recess in Abbot Square, where you can play dodgeball, four-square,
jump-rope, red rover, hopscotch, and all the freeze tag you can
handle.
But don’t forget to listen for the bell, and check out more A+
activities inside: UCSC’s Pop-Up Gallery Class will pop up with
participatory art installations while the UCSC Student Art Movement
will lead art workshops for all ages. ROP Media Arts Department at
Harbor High will explore school day memories through impromptu video
interviews as a video screening of movies made by high school students
will flow through the auditorium. A colorful display of student
photography and graphic design will be complimented by a silk
screening workshop, where visitors are invited to bring in tshirts,
tote bags, or clothing to silkscreen the MAH logo onto. Learn all
about Photoshop and graphic design by creating your own Andy Warhol
portrait or editing your photograph into a Rolling Stone magazine
cover. And if you’ve always wanted to recreate your school yearbook,
well now’s your chance to do so with our yearbook photo booth, a
memory maker equipped with wigs and silly props.
So whether your want to discover student art or challenge your chess
nemesis, come flaunt your school spirit in the inventive classroom and
boundless playground of MAH.
