A 9/11 Remembrance: When Lilacs Last in the Dooryard Bloom'd

A Requiem for those we love: Paul Hindemith's epic setting of Walt Whitman's elegy written shortly after the assassination of Abraham Lincoln. Performance by Cabrillo Symphonic Chorus and Ensemble Monterey, under the direction of Cheryl Anderson.

The three major symbols of the elegy—lilac, star, and hermit thrush—firmly root this remembrance in the natural world. Discussion with the musicians follow the performance.
