Bassist Ben Williams moves fast. A DC native, the recent Michigan State grad has already won the Thelonious Monk International Jazz Competition, a contract with Concord Records, become a sought-after sideman for like likes of Wynton Marsalis and Terence Blanchard, and most importantly, has launched a budding career as a bandleader of esteem. With his warm, woody and enveloping tone, Williams delivers R&B-flecked jazz; negotiating classic turns, while making his own rules of the road. State of the Art (Concord Records) is his debut as a leader.
