'Good Neighbor' Initiative Will Help College Kids, Environment
The community is encouraged to tell any UCSC student who lives off-campus and is moving this summer about the program.
From The City of Santa Cruz: The City of Santa Cruz, the UC Santa Cruz Good Neighbor Initiative and the UC Santa Cruz Office of Sustainability are partners in the sixth annual UCSC Move-Out Program. The program offers students who live off campus opportunities to donate unwanted, but still usable, items to local charitable organizations, participate in the citywide Garage Sale Weekend or have their unusable bulky items hauled away.
The program combats the common student move-out behavior of placing items on the sidewalk with a “FREE” sign. This material often ends up in waterways, the bay or landfills. To minimize this unfriendly environmental impact, Good Neighbor interns are leading a UCSC campus outreach effort by distributing fliers and tabling at popular locations where students may register for the City’s Bulky Item Pick-up service via mobile phone.
The UCSC Move-Out Program in conjunction with the Bulky Item Pick-up service and Santa Cruz Garage Sale Weekend make good use of City resources and decrease the likelihood of illegal dumping as students run short on time to wrap up their Santa Cruz residency.
