Independent Bookstore Day is Saturday, April 30th
A huge variety of daylong celebrations that you don't want to miss--replete with contests, prizes, family events, refreshments, and books!

Good things come in threes! This year’s third annual Independent Bookstore Day celebrations at Bookshop Santa Cruz will feature even more exciting local partnerships and a huge variety of daylong celebrations that you don’t want to miss--replete with contests and prizes, flash mobs and family events, refreshments (thanks to Verve and Santa Cruz Mountain Brewing), and a new Coloring Book Happy Hour. Launched in California in 2014, this celebration of Independent Bookstores has since expanded nationwide and is one of our most anticipated events. Join us all day long for exclusive items, laughter, and a festival of literary proportions!

Special Events:
9:00 a.m.: Share a perfectly smooth cup of coffee with us, courtesy of Verve Coffee Roasters (www.vervecoffeeroasters.com), to launch this year’s exclusive Independent Bookstore Day Merchandise. Contributed by authors and artists worldwide exclusively for Independent Bookstore Day, these limited-edition products are only available for one day. In previous years, many exclusive items have sold out in the first hour! The 2016 batch of treasures includes a Neil Gaiman coloring book, an illustrated guide to making the perfect burger by Anthony Bourdain, even a how-to-draw book featuring Children’s characters like Curious George.
10:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m.: Santa Cruz Shakespeare presents a family-focused pairing of fun and activities. From 10:00 a.m. to noon, create costume collages for Shakespeare characters. Then practice your Shakespearean insults from noon to 1:00 p.m.!

2:30-4:30 p.m.: Join us for a family centric group activity lead by the incredible teens of the Museum of Art & History’s teen collaborative, Subjects to Change. These youth leaders and dreamers use the power of art and creativity to draw attention to important issues, uplifting and strengthening our community.
5:00-6:00 p.m.: Coloring Book Happy Hour lets you play with colored pencils, markers, and crayons to wind down the day and features samples from popular Adult & Children’s coloring books, and delicious refreshments. All attendees can enter a raffle for a coloring book prize package provided by Sterling Publishers, and some other goodies perfect for a cozy day of coloring.
7:00-8:00 p.m.: Bookshop’s third annual Literary Trivia Night with refreshments sponsored by Santa Cruz Mountain Brewing and hosted by local Trivia Master Thomas Todd. Form a team of 2-6 players, use your literary knowledge—and your English degree finally!—and win swag. To register, sign up at our information desk or e-mail bookshopweb@gmail.com with a team name and number of players on your team. Advanced registration suggested but not required.
All Day Fun:
Prize Wheel: Earn your chance to spin and win great Bookshop prizes with the purchase of any Independent Bookstore Day item, or any book purchase of $30 or more by a Readers’ Club member (while prizes last; adult and children's prizes available).
Literary Scavenger Hunt: Our "Guess the book by its cover" scavenger hunt will challenge your book knowledge and take you on a fun tour of the store. Complete the hunt for a chance to win a $20 Bookshop gift card. Kids’ version available.
Photo Booth: Show off your indie bookstore love with our sweet props and your smiling self.
Raffles and Flash Prizes: Enter our raffle for a collectible vinyl recording of Expedition by Chuck Palahniuk.
