Man Convicted Of Brutalizing Woman, Faces 40 Years In Prison
A Salinas man who repeatedly brutalized a woman he was involved with was found guilty of multiple violent felonies.
SALINAS, CA — A Salinas man who repeatedly brutalized a woman he was involved with was found guilty of multiple violent felonies, the Monterey County District Attorney's Office said.
Arnold Mata Sanchez, 27, was found guilty of inflicting corporal injury to a dating partner with personal infliction of great bodily injury, mayhem, kidnapping, and criminal threats with personal use of a dangerous weapon.
Victim "Jane Doe" and Mata Sanchez had only been dating for a few weeks in 2025 when he began to become increasingly violent toward her over perceived infidelity, prosecutors said Tuesday. As a user of methamphetamine, Mata Sanchez had paranoia that led him to threaten Doe with extreme violence and then act on it.

According to the District Attorney's Office, fearing that the police would come looking for them, Mata Sanchez and the others in the hotel room got into a car with Doe. While in the vehicle for multiple hours, Mata Sanchez continued to be violent with Doe and encouraged others to do so as well.
A little before 2:30 a.m. on March 24, one of the vehicle occupants escaped from the vehicle and ran away to call 911. Doe also attempted to escape. However, Mata Sanchez grabbed Doe by the hair and arms and forced her to remain in the vehicle as it drove off.
Three hours later, Salinas police officers were able to find the suspect vehicle and conducted a traffic stop on West Market and Clay Street. Inside were Doe, Mata Sanchez and two other occupants. Mata Sanchez attempted to run from the police during the traffic stop but was quickly detained and arrested. Mata Sanchez had Doe's blood on his hands, shoe, and belt at the time.
Doe was taken to the hospital, where staff observed bruises all over her body in various stages of healing.
Mata Sanchez is scheduled to be sentenced on March 10, and he is looking at more than 40 years in state prison, prosecutors said.
