Newborn Sea Otter at Monterey Bay Aquarium
The bay sea otter is less than a week old and weighs just three pounds. Because of her size, she's considered fragile.

The Monterey Bay Aquarium has an adorable new resident--a sea otter that was just one day old when she was rescued earlier this week.
The cuddly pup was found abandoned in Morro Bay. When efforts to find her mother were unsuccessful, she was captured, bundled up and brought to the aquarium.

Given the impersonal name 716, because she’s the 716th pup rescued since the program began in the 1980s, this aquatic furball needs to be taught all the basics of how to be a sea otter. The plan is to have one of the resident females become her surrogate mother.
When she’s old enough and has sufficient skills, 716 will be released into Monterey Bay.
