Q&A: Newly Opened Pet Care Provider Fights For Her Business
Eileen Russell branched out on her own and started her business in January. And then the coronavirus pandemic hit.
SANTA CRUZ, CA — Woman-owned Santa Cruz business Sit Walk & Wag had just launched in January to serve local pet parents. Then the coronavirus pandemic sent Eileen Russell's business "to a screeching halt," she said.
Patch is trying to support local businesses by giving them a platform to share their successes and tribulations during the coronavirus pandemic. The following comes from Russell, owner of Sit Walk & Wag (Editor's note: These responses have been lightly edited for clarity):

Although I am not new to this industry, I officially launched my own business, then COVID-19 hit. My business came to a screeching halt as many pet parents are working from home, lay-offs happened and pet parents are not traveling for me to do house-sits.
How have you adapted and continued to serve people during this time?
For some time during this pandemic, I was only able to service essential workers. Now that the dog walking restriction has been lifted, I am continuing to search for reoccurring regular services for clients.
What aspect of your work are you most looking forward to returning to when restrictions are lifted?
Walking and being with pups again! It brings me the greatest joy building a bond with the pups. That bond makes all the difference in a dog's behavior.
Is there anything else you'd like to tell readers or customers?
It’s important to shop local. There are many local pet care providers. I’m here and would love to find out your pet care needs. I’m licensed, insured, bonded and background-checked.
