Shark Bites Paddleboard Off Monterey Peninsula
The beach was closed and monitored for safety.
PACIFIC GROVE, CA — A shark bit a paddleboard off of Lovers Point Beach in Pacific Grove on Wednesday morning but the person and dog aboard it were able to escape uninjured, police said.
The encounter with the shark happened around 11:30 a.m. about 150 yards off of the pier, where the animal swam underneath the paddleboard, then turned and bit it, causing the person and dog to be thrown off. They were able to get back on the paddleboard and got to shore uninjured, according to police.
City officials followed California State Parks protocol to close the beach until Saturday while it is monitored for safety, and the paddleboard will be tested so authorities can try to determine what shark species bit it, police said.
