SANTA CRUZ COUNTY, CA -This Saturday morning, dozens of brave locals will plunge into the surf next to the Santa Cruz Wharf (some trailed by rubber ducks), and swim a mile around the iconic landmark, all under the same banner: Will Swim For Food.

The event is the brainchild of Plantronics employee Nick Alaga, who, in 2010, wanted to contribute to Second Harvest Food Bank’s Holiday Food Drive. Unable to offer funds, the avid swimmer thought about what he could contribute, writing on his fundraising flyers, “Will Swim For Food.”
Alaga swam the frigid mile, blowing his fundraising goal out of the water and turning Will Swim For Food into an annual cold-water event.

“Doing this swim makes me realize how lucky I am to be healthy enough to go out there,” Nick reflects. “Today I wonder what I’m going to have for dinner, yet there are those in our community who wonder if they are going to have dinner.”
Saturday’s event raises money for Second Harvest Food Bank Santa Cruz County and other community food banks, and will feature dozens of swimmers, food, sun (if the forecast holds), and bagpipers.
