SANTA CRUZ, CA — Possible changes are in the works for downtown Santa Cruz.

The city is working on a plan for amplifying an area south of Laurel Street. The main objectives are more affordable housing options, public amenities like parks and plazas, improving connections to the San Lorenzo River and beach areas and a new permanent arena for the Santa Cruz Warriors, the city said.

Planning is supposed to happen over the next 20 months and the decision will ultimately be left up to the city council. An initial virtual meeting happened in November of 2021 introducing the idea. The first phase included public comment and feedback. Now the city invites the community to an open house to talk about some more options.
