SANTA CRUZ, CA — A neglected turkey will not be served up for Thanksgiving dinner, nor will it be shivering in the cold. Instead, the bird was rescued Tuesday from a homeless encampment along the San Lorenzo River, Santa Cruz County officials said.

The feathered creature had reportedly been living at the site for several weeks. Santa Cruz County animal control officers along with Santa Cruz City Police Department Rangers took action Tuesday morning and seized the down-and-out bird.

Police said the critter had likely been stolen.
