This event brings together community experts with folks seeking to learn how to repair common household items. Resource Recovery staff will be on hand to show you how to repurpose trash into crafty treasures and if you have something broken you’d like to learn how to fix, bring it over! Repair Café is presented in conjunction with the City of Santa Monica’s Resource Recovery Program. (http://facebook.com/santamonicarrr), Repair Cafe International (http://repaircafe.org/), Our Time Bank (http://ourtimebank.timebanks.org/) and Transition Culver City (http://transitionculvercity.org/).
We throw away an incredibl...e amount of stuff every day - but imagine extending the life of your items at little to no cost! Saving used items from landfills is key to reducing our waste. Bring torn clothes, books, broken furniture, electrical appliances, bicycles, computers, and toys. Volunteers will be on hand to help and offer advice on the best way to reuse and repair your most beloved possessions.
Repair stations tentatively include: Bikes, Jewelry, Smartphones, Guitars, Electronics, Small Appliances, and Garments. Drop off larger items curbside right out front before parking. If you know how to fix something please send email to recycling@smgov.net; we welcome volunteers.
What to bring? 1) Your craft projects, a DIY attitude and a spirit of discovery! 2) Broken items and any replacement parts/equipment you think you might need to repair them; we’ll also have some materials and equipment. 3) Curiosity about upcycling and a desire to make holiday ornaments and other items from recycled materials! Disclaimers: there is no guarantee youll walk out with a workable item; we may not be staffed with the right skills; it may take some time to research and/or find repair parts; it may just not be feasible to repair your item. But we’ll help you give it your best shot.
Staying for a short while - parking’s a breeze! $4 for 3.5 hours at Structure 6, right around the corner, or $5 all day at the Civic Auditorium lot down the way. Drop off large items right in front.
