ROOTED AMERICA is a traveling residency chronicling a trail of rhythm, voices, movement and images, honoring the ways that sculptors, musicians, printmakers, theatre creators, choreographers, quilters and art-makers of all kinds are making their mark throughout the United States.
Printmaker Lukaza Branfman-Verissimo and choreographer Suchi Branfman, both community activists, educators and socially engaged artists, traveled throughout the Unites States on a seven week tour in July and August of this year. They moved from their home state of California, through the Southern states to the Gullah Islands of South Carolina and up the Eastern seaboard to Northern Vermont, then westward through Minneapolis and Seattle.
After looking and listening to ways that people are and have been sustained by art, how art has impacted individual lives and the life of communities, they have returned with an archive of prints and choreography that reflect their findings. For this event, all are welcome to learn about their mobile residency experience and gather to get a taste of creating dance with Suchi and prints using monotype and collograph techniques with Lukaza.
As with all Camera Obscura Art Lab events, this is geared toward 18+, and depending on attendance, participants may come away with some choreography or a print. More info about their project at rootedamerica.tumblr.com.
Parking is around the corner at Structure 6 on 2nd, $1 for 2.5 hours.
Lukaza Branfman-Verissimo is an artist working in printmaking that integrates sculpture and installation. Lukazas work is informed by her commitment to craft and community, engagement with society, and interest in storytelling and cultural geography. She is interested in how individual tales can be seen as interacting with the social, political and natural world in which surrounds us. This locating is very much at the core of her work; through literal and abstract representation of maps, buildings, the human form and human struggles. Lukaza recently received her Bachelors of Fine Arts with a focus in printmaking and community arts, from California College of the Arts in Oakland, CA.
Suchi Branfman has had the honor of working for many years, both nationally and internationally, throughout the United States, Canada, Europe, the Soviet Union, Cuba, Brazil, Nicaragua and South Africa. She has danced from the war zones of Nicaragua to Moscows Bolshoi Theatre and from Californias womens prisons to NYCs Joyce Theatre, as soloist and with the likes of Wallflower Order, Crowsfeet Dance Collective and many others. Suchi is currently making dance, growing and serving food in her community garden and serving on faculty at Scripps College in Claremont, CA.
