A preliminary investigation found that the victim was approached by a group of people and an altercation occurred during an attempted robbery, police said.

During the altercation, one person fired a gun, striking the victim in the leg.

Officers provided emergency medical aid before the victim was taken to a local hospital with injuries believed to be non-life-threatening, police said.

The group fled the scene. Police said Sunday night that officers were working to identify and locate those involved.

A helicopter could be heard circling over downtown Santa Monica for an extended period Sunday evening while the investigation was underway.

The shooting came one day after a separate deadly police encounter nearby in Palisades Park.

On Saturday afternoon, a Santa Monica police officer shot and killed a man who Police Chief Darrick Jacob said charged at officers with a knife while they were investigating an unrelated domestic violence incident in the 1400 block of Palisades Park.

Police said the man was not involved in the domestic violence incident. He was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
