SANTA MONICA, CA — Santa Monica police are investigating the death of model Presley Gerber, the 27-year-old son of Cindy Crawford and Rande Gerber, as a suspected overdose after officers found him dead Sunday morning.
Officers responded at approximately 9:35 a.m. to a report of a possible overdose in the 1000 block of Berkeley Street, according to a Santa Monica Police Department statement released Monday.
Officers found a man dead at the scene, and the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner subsequently identified him as Gerber, police said.
Detectives are investigating Gerber's death as a suspected overdose, although police stressed that the official cause and manner of death will be determined by the Medical Examiner. SMPD said there is currently no indication of foul play and that its investigation remains ongoing.
The new details provide a clearer picture of the circumstances surrounding Gerber's death, which was first reported by Patch Monday morning. Medical Examiner records identify his place of death as a rehabilitation facility.
Emergency dispatch recordings obtained by PEOPLE provide additional details about the response. According to the outlet, one dispatch referenced a cardiac arrest in the 1000 block of Berkeley Street, while another indicated that first responders were responding to an overdose at the address.
The Medical Examiner completed its examination Monday, but the official cause and manner of Gerber's death remain undetermined.
"A deputy medical examiner performed an examination today and the cause and manner of death have been deferred, which means additional testing and/or studies were requested in order to make a determination," the Medical Examiner said in a statement reported by PEOPLE.
The department said it could not disclose what additional testing or studies were requested because the death investigation remains ongoing. Deferred cases can take a few months before a cause of death is determined, according to the Medical Examiner.
Gerber, the older brother of model and actress Kaia Gerber, was himself a model and had signed with IMG Models as a teenager. His family has asked for privacy following his death, according to Patch's initial report.
Police have not publicly identified what substance, if any, may have been involved in the suspected overdose.
