Art at Delphi Santa Monica: Budding and Seasoned Student Artists Explore Art Through STEAM Learning
STEAM learning at Delphi Santa Monica lets students use art education to bolster their science and math studies.

Most parents know that a thorough understanding of science, math and technology will be key to their children’s success in this modern world. What they don’t always know is how to actually cultivate these skills at school and at home in a way that students will respond to. Luckily, Delphi Santa Monica participates in one of the best programs in the country for developing these skills.
Delphi Santa Monica’s STEAM program, which stands for “Science & Technology, interpreted through Engineering & the Arts, all based in Mathematical elements”, was introduced this year at the school. On the very first day of school, all students were able to participate in an art class with Ms. Bobbie. Students were given art supplies to work with in conjunction with math and science lessons. They were able to understand the lesson better when it was presented in conjunction with real life practical examples they could see in their artwork.
In addition to having art supplies to work with, Delphi Santa Monica students also had a “tinkering station” where they could work with a variety of both new and recycled materials. With everything from bits of metal to yarn and twigs, students let their creativity run wild. Before the end of the first week, students were able to bring home projects as varied as wind chimes and jewelry for their moms and friends!

What does all of this have to do with math and science? Most experts in the fields would agree that the spirit of tinkering and experimenting is at the very core of learning how these fields apply to life. When students have a chance to create, they start looking for ways to apply what they’re learning to their creations!
At the end of every school day, students in these classes often didn’t want to go home. They were having so much fun in their STEAM programs that they just wanted to keep on going. As the year continues, they’ll have many chances to do so. They are seeing first-hand how much joy their tinkering and art creations can bring, and they have no intention of stopping.
