Marbling is the art of printing multi-colored swirled or stone-like patterns on paper or fabric. The patterns are formed by first floating the colors on the surface of a liquid, and then laying the paper or fabric onto the colors to absorb them. Besides bookbinding, marbled papers can be used to cover anything from pencils to picture frames, placemats to lampshades. The art of marbling (or marbleizing) was started in the 1100s, in Turkey or Persia, though the earliest marbled papers still in existence are 15th century Turkish examples. Not only were they used for decoration, but also as background for official documents to prevent erasure and forgery. In bookbinding, the intricate patterns of the papers were used to cover the folds, strings, and glue marks on the bindings, and also to serve as an aesthetic transition from the dark leather covers to the white pages inside. The marblers' guilds were separate from the bookbinders' guilds, who were forever spying on the marblers, trying to discover the techniques of marbling to avoid the high cost of their papers. So for centuries, the marblers did their work at night in secret laboratories, behind locked doors, and hardly anyone could hope to learn the art unless he was born into a marbling family. We'll be going over making handmade paper, marbling endpapers, binding signatures, and adorning our books with printed bookplates or drawn illustrations. Upon graduation from California State University, Northridge with a B.A. in printmaking in 2013, Zeina Baltagi co-founded the Valley Print Studio with fellow artist Miles Lewis in Woodland Hills. She currently teaches classes at LA Music and Art School, in East L.A. Baltagi recently exhibited work in 'Biomythography' curated by Jessica Wimbley and Chris Christian at Claremont Graduate University. In September 2015, she exhibited in the second installment of 'Biomythography' at California Lutheran University, and co-curated with A. Parking: Under $2 for the first 2.5 hours in Parking Structure 6 (1431 2nd Street between Broadway and Santa Monica). On weekends at the Civic Auditorium lot at 1855 Main St it's $5 all day except during special events. Pier Deck: $10-15/day; Beach Lot 1N just north of the Pier $6-12/day. Refunds/Transfers: Full refunds are given if class is cancelled before taking place - enroll online with confidence. For student withdrawals for any other reason, $15 processing fee for each multisession activity refunded; one-time classes & expended material fees are nonrefundable.
