Breaking Bad...Habits.

Breaking habits are never easy but experts say give it 66 days.

According to a study done by University College London in 2009, a group of 96 individuals were studied over the space of 12 weeks. The results found that the average time it takes for a new habit to stick is actually 66 days. However this can be longer or shorter depending on the individual and how long the old habit has been in place.

The following is a simple approach to breaking bad habits. Many books and self help gurus have gone into depth about habit breaking but through it all, some basic principles remain.

Bad habits provide some type of benefit in your life thus making it difficult to overcome. For example, if you smoke when you are stressed then it is important to address the stress with another positive habit before it comes around again. Perhaps, deep breathing? If you notice that at 3PM you usually crave a sugary mid-afternoon snack? Have an apple on hand instead. The key is to notice what benefit the habit has given you and try to replace it with a more positive one instead.

A key question to ask yourself is, “What is the benefit of changing this habit? Keep this answer handy as a motivational reminder when you are feeling that your new habit is out of reach.

Of course the benefit of quitting smoking is better health but perhaps you have promised yourself a reward at the end of 3 months? Maybe a new pair of shoes or that spa day you’ve been wanting? Tell some close friends or family about your new habit and create some accountability.

In the beginning 66 days can seem like forever but just take it one day at a time. If you have a moment of weakness, forgive yourself and get right back on the saddle. Replacing bad habits with new ones are never easy but with patience and perseverance, you can give up those old habits for good!
