Hearing Fireworks? It's Still Illegal In Santa Monica
As the July 4 holiday approaches, Santa Monica officials are reminding locals that fireworks are still illegal.
SANTA MONICA, CA — You might be hearing fireworks in your neighborhood in Santa Monica as July 4 approaches, but that doesn't mean they're legal. And, most firework shows are canceled this year due to the pandemic.
Santa Monica fire officials are reminding the public that all types of fireworks are still illegal in the city.
"This includes so-called “safe and sane” fireworks, which may not be used in Santa Monica even if they are legal in the city in which they are purchased," according to a fire department news release. "Possession of fireworks is considered a misdemeanor and may be punishable up to $1,000 fine, and or six months in jail."

There are alternatives to fireworks on July 4.
"With COVID-19 stay at home measures in place, most official fireworks events have not been scheduled this year. Please check local news outlets for updates and information about other activities related to July 4," fire officials said.

Under Santa Monica's fire code, all fireworks are illegal in Santa Monica, including California State Fire Marshal “Safe and Sane” fireworks.
"No person shall possess, transport, sell or offer for sale any such fireworks," according to the law.
