1. Prop-Plane Traffic, Complaints Surge At Santa Monica Airport (patch.com) — Neighbors around Santa Monica Airport are reporting a sharp rise in noisy propeller-plane traffic, much of it tied to flight training that residents say sends aircraft circling overhead every few minutes. New data show prop operations have surged compared with last year, fueling a Venice-based petition drive as the city moves through the airport's final years before its planned 2028 closure.
   

2. Ocean Way Festival Takes Over Santa Monica Beach (smdp.com) — A large two-day Ocean Way Festival will transform Santa Monica Beach from the Pier to Bay Street on Sept. 26–27, bringing music, food, and community programming. Expect beach parking closures in Lots 1–5 South, temporary bike path detours, and sound testing, though the Pier, Ocean Front Walk, and most beach areas will remain open with some adjustments.
   

3. Mark Schrope: Urchins, robots, and a race to save kelp forests (oceanographicmagazine.com) — Santa Monica's offshore waters are seeing a dramatic kelp forest comeback, thanks to a long-running Bay Foundation project that has removed millions of purple sea urchins. The restored underwater habitat now spans roughly 80 acres, bringing back fish and other marine life and offering a model other coastal communities can copy to revive damaged kelp ecosystems worldwide.
   

4. Thousands of volunteers will join California Coastal Cleanup Day; sign up now (nbclosangeles.com) — California Coastal Cleanup Day is coming Sept. 19, and Santa Monica State Beach is one of several Los Angeles-area sites seeking volunteers. You can sign up in advance, bring gloves and bags, and help remove summer trash before winter storms wash more debris into the ocean and local waterways.
