Santa Monica City Council Wants Big Blue Buses To Be Electric

SANTA MONICA, CA – The Santa Monica City Council told leaders at the Big Blue Bus to move faster when it comes to transitioning their 200 buses to electric vehicles. The Council also authorized a pilot program at their Tuesday meeting with at least 10 electric buses, according to the Santa Monica Daily Press.

A staff analysis found that an all-electric fleet of buses would reduce the BBB's green-house gas emissions by nearly 70 percent, as long as 100 percent renewable electricity is used – even though their buses are already fueled by renewable natural gas.

“It may be a little bit painful to buy some buses, folks, but it’s our job to do it,” Councilmember Terry O’Day said during the Tuesday meeting, according to the newspaper. “We have the responsibility to lead in this county on these issues and to take the risks.”
