Santa Monica Election Results 2018: City Council, School Board

SANTA MONICA, CA – The votes are in and ballots are counted in Santa Monica, where residents voted Tuesday to fill three City Council seats, among a handful of ballot measures and more. As of Wednesday morning, 54 out of 54 precincts were reporting and the City Council candidates with the most votes are: Sue Himmerlich with 23.85 percent of the vote, Greg Morena with 19.91 percent of the vote and Kevin McKeown with 19.36 percent of the vote.

Santa Monica residents ousted longtime incumbent Pam O'Connor for newcomer Greg Morena.

For the three Rent Control Board member positions, these candidates are in the lead: Naomi Sultan with 26.50 percent of the vote, Nicole Phillis with 25.95 percent of the vote, and Steve Duron with 22.48 percent of the vote.

Santa Monica also voted on three measures: Measure RR, Measure SM, Measure TL and Measure SMS. All four have a "yes" majority as of Wednesday morning.

There were seven candidates running for a spot on Santa Monica City Council: Sue Himmelrich (council member/nonprofit attorney), Ashley Powell (nonprofit event planner), Geoffrey Neri (attorney-at-law), Kevin McKeown (council member/education consultant), Greg Morena (small business owner), Pam O'Connor (council member/urban planner) and Scott Bellomo (businessman).

Other issues Santa Monica voted on include:

  • Measure SM: "Shall City Charter Section 615 be amended to require, for a period of ten years, the votes of five Council members to amend (a) the Land Use and Circulation Element of (b) Downtown Community Plan, where that amendment would increase the maximum height limit or floor area ratio in any land use designation, with exceptions for 100% Affordable Housing Projects and property owned by Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District?"
  • Measure TL: "Shall the Santa Monica City Charter be amended to prohibit any person from serving as a member of the City Council for more than three terms, whether consecutive or not, where a term includes any full term of four years as well as any partial term of more than two years?"
  • Measure RR: Shall the City Charter be amended to change the eligibility requirement for service on the City's Library Board, Personnel Board, and Airport Commission from that of "qualified elector" of the City to "resident" of the City to ensure compliance with applicable laws related to compensation and reimbursement?"
  • Measure SMS: "Santa Monica Classroom Repair and 21st Century Education Bond: To improve, repair and modernize outdated Santa Monica classrooms, science labs, libraries, instructional technology and other school facilities; to improve school safety/security systems; shall Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District's School Facilities Improvement District No. 1 (Santa Monica Schools) issue $485 million of bonds at legal interest rates, averaging $27.4 million raised annually to repay issued bonds through final maturity, from levies estimated at four cents per $100 assessed value, with citizens' over site, annual audits and all funds benefiting Santa Monica schools?"
  • Three members of the Rent Control Board
  • Four members of the Board of Trustees for the Santa Monica Community College District
  • Four members of the Board of Education for the Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District
