Suspect Charged With Multiple Felonies In Santa Monica Shooting

SANTA MONICA, CA — The suspect in a shooting that occurred in Santa Monica this week was arrested on five felony charges on Thursday, according to the Santa Monica Police Department.

At 12:29 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 29 SMPD was dispatched to the 2500 block of Kansas Avenue after a report said there may be a potentially suicidal subject at a multifamily apartment building. Upon arrival, officers were not able to locate the person.

A 911 call at 2:37 p.m. the same day reported that the same subject has forced entry into an apartment armed with a handgun, robbed the residents at gunpoint and refused to allow them to leave.

"When officers arrived on scene, they located the subject barricaded in the same apartment and armed with a handgun," SMPD said in a statement. "The subject pointed the handgun at officers and an officer involved shooting occurred."

After the shooting, the man refused to leave the apartment according to police. The suspect peacefully surrendered to the Crisis Negotiation Team at 3:15 p.m. and was transported to a local hospital for a non-life-threatening injury to his face.

On Thursday the Los Angeles County District Attorney's office filed multiple felony charges against the man including robbery, burglary, false imprisonment, brandishing a weapon and assault on police officers.
