Tips to Combat First-Day Jitters

The first day of a new school or school year can be tough for any student. These tips can help every family be more comfortable for school.

Heading to the first day of school can be scary for anyone. Many students, old and new, battle with nervousness when beginning school again. It can be scary, but it doesn’t have to be! Read our top six tips to help your kid get over their first-day jitters:

  1. Talk to them! One of the big reasons kids get nervous before school is because they don’t know what to expect. Who will they talk to? Who will they sit with? What will the classes be like? Help answer their questions and talk them through different scenarios. The more familiar they feel, the calmer they will be.

  2. Get a good night’s sleep. Sleep is important for both you and your children on the night before the school year begins! Ease them to bed early. With a good night of sleep under their belt the jitters will already begin to decrease.

  3. Help them get ready. Kids are sometimes nervous about how they look on the first day of school. Help them do their hair and pick out an outfit. The more confident they are in themselves, the easier it will be to face the new challenges ahead of them.

  4. Drive them there. Rather than making them walk or take the bus, your kid would probably feel more comfortable getting dropped off the first day. You can give them one more pep talk on the drive to school.

  5. Introduce them to the teacher. If your kid is nervous about what the classes and teachers will be like, go into the school with them. Introduce them to the teacher and help them get to know each other before you leave.

  6. Be there right on time to pick them up. After school is out they may be nervous to wait a long time. It can be hard to start conversation on the first day. By the time the day is over they will be excited to see you and tell you all about it. Be on time, or even a bit early, and ease their nerves!

It’s hard to get rid of all first-day jitters, but by applying the above tips you may be able to get most of them to go away! Your kid will feel better prepared for their new school or new year and face it with excitement and confidence. Knowing more about your new school can help as well.
