13 Injured in East County Pileup

Eleven adults and two teenagers were taken to four hospitals for treatment, authorities said.

El Cajon β€” A pileup involving a half-dozen vehicles left 13 people injured on an East County street Monday afternoon.

The chain-reaction series of crashes occurred about 2:30 p.m. on Greenfield Drive, near Interstate 8 in El Cajon, said Sonny Saghera, spokesman for Heartland Fire & Rescue.

Emergency crews had to use hydraulic cutting and prying tools to get several of the victims out of crumpled cars, a process that took roughly 20 minutes, Saghera said.

Medics took the patients β€” 11 adults and two teenagers β€” to Alvarado, Grossmont, Sharp and Rady Children's hospitals for treatment of minor to moderately serious injuries.

"An MCI (Mass Casualty Incident) was declared, which alerts local area hospitals that multiple patients are being treated at an emergency incident," Saghera said.

Authorities had the roadway clear in the area within about 45 minutes, he said.

El Cajon police traffic investigators were working to determine the cause of the accident.
